Shoulda’ Had a Sangwedge!?

Nebaletan Word of the Day – Sangwedge

SANGWEDGE (pronounced Sang-wedge) is a word that my mother (Grandma Joanne) detested!  I’m not sure if she detested it because it was from a language that she didn’t believe existed or that it originated from her mother-in-law, Grandma Rocco (aka Grandma Flo). Grandma Rocco, having been born just outside of Napoli, was the most Nebaletan of us all…so because of this, SANGWEDGE is Nebaletan!

Even though Grandma Joanne had her own language (learned or created…), she was a stickler for words outside of her own language, such as, SANGWEDGE!

Any time that Grandma Joanne would hear the word SANGWEDGE she’d immediately say in protest, “SANDWICH!

I reached out to my trusted advisors, Carm, Donnie, and Chuck. Carm and Chuck never heard of or used it, whereas for Donnie, SANGWIDGE (aka SANGWEDGE) was used extensively by his aunts. And, as a matter of fact, Donnie readily admitted to slipping up and using SANGWIDGE recently!!!!

After a little more research, I found that SANGWEDGE is more heavily used than just by Grandma Rocco!  Urban Dictionary actually has TWO definitions!

  1. Urban Dictionary: sangwich
  2. Urban Dictionary: sangwidge

And there’s even a YouTube about it:

Pizza Review – Oak and Stone, Sarasota, FL

In December, while compiling my lists, I distinctly remember seeing Oak and Stone featured as a recommended pizza spot in the Sarasota newspaper. Armed with this expectation, I enthusiastically proposed to our friends visiting from Rochester that we should all try Oak and Stone together.

Despite Oak and Stone’s claim to be a Craft Beer and Artisan Pizza establishment, I found it amusing that their homepage lacked any pizza imagery. In hindsight, perhaps I should have been more cautious—this dining experience was destined for an unexpected twist!” 🍕😄

About UsNone – why are they in the pizza business? Just to put something on their sign?!
AmbianceActually, a pretty cool place inside! I especially liked the choice of 50 beers on tap which you could pour for yourself and you paid for by the ounce.

But, before I go on, if you see either of these in a pizza place (notice I didn’t call Oak and Stone a pizzeria)…RUN FAR AWAY AND FAST!

Even if you only see one of the above…RUN FAR AWAY AND FAST!

Rating Criteria
StyleUnsure what the style was; possibly cheese and cracker?!
ShapeRound

Dough/CrustTickness – Trisket Cracker Thin

Cook – Crispy, Burnt on BOTH PIZZAS.   Burnt is NOT CHAR!

“Burntness” covered any other flavors.  Why not send it back?  That’s not the way it works.  There’s one shot to get it right. It’s love at first sight or not!

Flavor – Burnt

CornicioneDespite being burnt, the cornicione was almost edible!  It was crispy, spongy, and bubbly.  But, it was still burnt!

ToppingsPepperoni & Cheese
Fresh – Unsure (not likely given the canned sauce)
SauceThere was very little sauce.  It took lots of hunting to find any.  But it was tangy in the few places that had sauce.  The sauce had no other discernible flavor other than tomato.
CheeseCheese Type – Moozedell
Cheese Distribution – All over, splotchy
Cheese taste – lost in the “burntness”
Cheese to Sauce RatioSauce = A little, very little
Cheese = Medium
Balance = almost irrelevant due to the lack of taste above burnt
ValueMeh (even though I won’t say there’s bad pizza, I will say there’s bad pricing.   THIS IS IT!!!)

$15.50 for the cheese and $16.75 for the pepperoni.

As you can see from the pictures above, the smashed dough, when cooked shrunk significantly smaller than the 12″ serving tray.  Let’s say they are 10″ (so the price is a whopping $18.60 and $20.10 for a 12″ equivalent!  HOLY CRAP!
Overall RatingMeh

One of the worst pizzas I’ve had.

It wasn’t even good when cold, day old after a very long bike ride.  In those situations, I can always find a redeeming quality in a pizza, but not this one!
Would I Go Back? Not a chance in hell!

I swear I saw that Oak and Stone was on a list for pizzas to eat in the Sarasota newspaper. I truly hope I was wrong because the pizza at Oak and Stone was one of the worst that I’ve ever had. I always say that there’s never a bad pizza, but this came close.

Shoulda’ had a SANGWEDGE!
