I want to divert from MY TOWNS which has been the subject for several weeks of posts because my birthday is tomorrow.
When I’m 64!
So, I’m nearly there! One more year to go!
One more year to what? 65 years old. 65 seems so arbitrary. Why not 64, or according to Social Security, it could be 65 and 6 months or even 66! My Garmin says that my “fitness age” is about 53! My cardiologist says that my arteries are closer to 80!
64 must have meant something….or why else would the Beatles write a great and famous song about it?
I used to care about my age; especially when I was racing. My age group, and more specifically, what other racers happened to be in my age group, mattered to me. Now, no matter what, I don’t care about age anymore. I now ride with guys in the 80’s who would smoke most cyclists. But, my dad (Grandpa Tony) used to say, “Orwell, time marches on.”
I will add, time marches on, until it doesn’t. Orwell!
Nebalatan Word of the Day (Grandpa Tony-ism) – Orwell (Or Well)
Another of the “famous” Grandpa Tony-isms is Orwell/Or Well…
I believe, like many that grew up during the Depression (the real one in the 1930’s), Grandpa Tony had a uncertain belief that things were primarily out of his control. The control belonged to his bosses, or his union stewards, or the government. And his job was to simply follow along.
And when something went as not expected, Grandpa Tony would exclaim, “Or Well” instead of “Oh Well.”
I’m guessing that Grandpa Tony came up with this expression because the village, Orwell, OH (see Wikipedia) is only a few miles south of Ashtabula, where he lived his entire life.
This exclamation was never a yell or scream, it was simply said in Grandpa Tony’s understated, a matter-of-fact way. And since Orwell, OH is at best understated and a matter-of-fact, the expression makes some sense…kinda’!
Corry, PA Post Office
Just like our last Post Office in Warren, PA, the Corry, PA Post Office was built in 1913, well before the WPA (Works Progress Administration – see here).
And maybe because it wasn’t a WPA project, it’s much more majestic than many of the WPA Post Offices. The Corry PO is a massive stone (limestone, sandstone?) structure with beautiful buttressed columns, ornate stonework, and several nice touches like the patinaed copper front doors, lamp posts and entrance lights. The crowns on top of the entrance lights are beautiful!

If the exterior of the Corry, PA PO is majestic, the interior is a carved marble, carved and cast brass, and mosaic tile piece of art!

After my ride on August 31, 2023, we made a short drive south from Hubbard, OH where my ride ended (after 70 miles and almost a mile of climbing!) to Struthers, OH to visit St. Anthony’s Bistro.
That day would have been my dad’s (Grandpa Tony) 96 birthday, so it was appropriate to get a pie from St. Anthony’s!
St. Anthony’s Bistro is tucked into the back of St. Anthony’s Society, which is basically a bar. But here’s the cool part: it used to be home to Italian immigrant workers in the early 1900s. Talk about history!
The pizza style is a bit of a mashup, like a love child of Detroit and Mahoning Valley. Sounds intriguing, right? In a neat 12″ square shape of full cheese and half pepperoni.
The dough/crust was thick, buttery, and chewy. While the edge, or cornicione, is soft and airy, and they give it an “oil pan fry” treatment, like a Detroit-style pizza – OUTSTANDING!
There is plenty of sauce, and it’s tangy, thick, and piled on top of the moozedell cheese. Yep, you guessed it – OUTSTANDING!
Next, they sneak moozedell cheese under the sauce, and then they load up with a heap of Pecorino Romano. This adds a definite bite and sharpness to the mix. And yes, you guessed it again – OUTSTANDING!
A far as Value, drumroll, please! It’s OUTSTANDING value. Just $13 for a 12″ square pizza.
Overall: GREAT! I’ve purchased pizza 22 times in 2023. This is only the 2nd pizza that has been rated as great (less than 10%)!!!! This is a special pizza
-Would They Go Back? In a heartbeat, or as they say, in an “Ohio Minute”!
So, there you have it – an awesome pizza adventure at St A’s Bistro in Struthers, Oh! Enjoy your next Ohio pizza stop!
