Day 3 of PA-WV-OH bike trip took us from Weirton, WV to Youngstown, OH, 70+ miles of hills. Only in WV for a short time, the route led us to several PA and OH small towns with historic Post offices.
The Beaver and Beaver Bowl
No, not the Beav, as in Leave it to Beaver, but the early part of my ride took me through Beaver County, PA and the towns of Beaver and Beaver Falls (the home of Joe Namath). Beaver was wide open (on Main Street). The Main Street was very cool, and crowded. Who knew Beavers were so popular. I saw a sign for Big Beaver and set out on a search to find the Big Beaver, but without luck. But there was a Harry’s in Beaver.

Before getting to Beaver, I rode through another great mill (former) town of Midland, PA. I love riding through these old hamlets of early 1900’s Americana. Typically, they have an old Post Office, and this one did not disappoint.

All this Beaver stuff, made me think of one of my old college roommates, Mike M. Mike M. was QB at Riverside HS, another school in our league before we met. Well, the Riverside football field was named the Beaver Bowl.
Each Monday during the season, Coach K. would play the game film for our next opponent. Well, the Riverside week film started with a close up of the sign Beaver Bowl. Coach K. says, “well, boys, looks like we’re hunting beaver this week!”
Coach K. was a great motivator (he’d eventually get elected to the Ohio High School Sports Hall of Fame). But, saying hunting beaver to a group of Catholic HS boys had us rolling on the ground! Us Catholic boys knew nothing about beaver, right?
Well, the motivation musta’ worked. We won on a Hail Mary (her beaver was pure, right!?) to end the game. That win generated enough computer points to lock our trip to the State Championship game series.
In any event, Mike M., for a reason that I can only call insanity or poor judgment or both, grew up just outside of Cleveland but was a Stiller fan. The argument was the same as with Red (see last blog post).
By then the Stillers had 4 championships. Magnanimously, I’d retort “We have 8.”
He’d amplify with, “Who’s era? Not my Era!”.
Now, 40 years later, what era is it now? We still have 8!
BTW, we’re at YSU today for the season opener. I parked adjacent to the house Mike M. and I shared with others. It’s the only one of two houses on Arlington Street that’s not been torn down by the university!

Salvatore’s Italian Grille
Hmm…Grille ends with an “e”, much be a classy place with good pizza….NOT!
After riding 76 miles and almost 7 hours, I was ready to eat. I figured we’d go to something other than pizza. We took a recommendation to visit Salvatore’s in Howland, OH. I order baked zeet (see an old bog post) and figured C. would order fish..NOT, she ordered pizza (after complaining about too much pizza…go figure!).
Date – September 2, 2022
City – Howland, OH
Beverage Pairing – House Chianti
Style – a, not sure, Garlic Garden style
Toppings – fresh moozedell, diced tomatoes seemed to be canned, basil. Full jar of garlic (there’s no way given the amount that it was freshly cut unless there was a full jar of garlic powder)
Cheese – Stringy, fresh
Sauce – it really wasn’t a sauce, it was diced tomato
Cheese to Sauce Ratio – Sauce Amount=none, Cheese Amount=Medium
Crust – Thin, Flavor=white bread toast, Crispy, No cornicione, tasted like pre-made/pare baked, machine rolled and formed with zero air
Comments – I had heartburn all night!
Overall Rating = Meh, which is not good (remember, those no bad pizza)
Go Back? Not in this lifetime
At least it’s a good game!
