GPS #4 – Dario’s, Farmington, NY

I had no intention of riding on Saturday, June 27. We had thunder and lightning overnight and into the morning. It was supposed to rain all day. But, the forecast changed, and although muggy, I chose to ride to Farmington, NY (~60 miles round trip) to a place (didn’t know if it was a joint or not yet) called Dario’s. I chose Dario’s because it’s in the same strip plaza as a Post Office that I’d not yet captured.

I pondered the term “pizza joint” as I rode. My mind’s eye pictures a “pizza joint” as a long, narrow street corner or stand alone brick building. Inside are pizza, beer, soda, and little else other than pictures of generations of family who’ve run the same establishment.

Here are examples in Brooklyn that are on my “pizza bucket list” (doesn’t everyone have a pizza bucket list?)

  • DiFara – a joint
  • Lucali – not a joint, too fancy and not generational, but I plan to travel there to eat it!
  • Best Pizza – almost a joint, not generational
  • BTW if you are going to NYC, here’s “the best” list

As I rode into the strip plaza, Cathy was waiting and said “I don’t want to be part of a blog post where you say that you are waiting for me!”

A strip plaza immediately disqualified Dario’s as a “joint”. That was further driven home by a rather drab interior.

I know, “why am I eating with my cycling gloves on?”

As for the pizza, unfortunately, they only had pepperoni (salame in Italy) while I’d prefer cheese fearing that the extra grease from the fatty meat wouldn’t agree with me on the ride home (it didn’t!).

Tastewise, it was good, not great, but the best of 3 so far!

  • Good thin crust with a little bit of crunch front to back. Also, it folded and stayed folded
  • Good application of sauce. The sauce taste had a good tang, but unfortunately, I noticed the canned sauce jars on the cooking counter as I entered
  • Both moozerdell and parmagian. The parmagian was likely bottled since it was rounded versus the strings of freshly ground
  • The topper, 2 slices and a 20 oz. soda for $5.50! It’s due to this value, that I’ve rated this the best of 3 (so far). I promise that I will have a table to summarize this soon.

The ultimate test, “would you go back?” Though good, not likely!

BTW – the post office was beyond drab too!

BTW 2 – baking my own pizza today with homemade sauce and two different sourdoughs 100% 00 Italian Fine flour and 100% unbleached bread flour!

More to follow!
