GPS #3 – Ah, Napoli, oops not that Naples!

Today, was GPS (Great Pizza Search) #3. I didn’t ride to today’s pizza joint, but trust me, I earned my pizza! Eventually, we made our way to Luigi’s in Naples (no, Naples, NY) after an epic gravel race.

The gravel race is Course 1 of the Durty Bike Gravel Race Series 2020 (https://durtybikes.com/). Due to Covid, it’s a virtual Strava series. The race started at the Steuben Brewing Company in Pultney, NY about 20 miles south of Naples, NY. It was a 48 mile mixed loop of gravel and road with 4200′ of climbing (ouch).

I did mention that the ride was epic right? Here are some views:

Now for Luigi’s. I did not go inside, but from the outside, it looked more like a dive restaurant, than a pizza joint. Don’t ask me to define pizza joint, but Nima’s was a joint, Luigi’s was not.

As with Nima’s, the pizza was good, not great. It was especially good after 4:45 of riding!

The crust was on the thicker side (I like it thin), soft, and easily foldable and stayed folded (my preference)! . It also had a little bit of crunch at the end crust, also something I like.

Lots of moozerdell, but no parmagian.

A very good application of sauce, not too much, but not too little unlike Nima’s. Also, the sauce had some smaller chunks indicating that it was either canned diced or home made Marzano put in a food processor. I wish I knew.

BUT, the sauce didn’t have any zing of sweetness, tanginess, or spice; just SALTY. Big, big, bummer!

Again, to end this, the true test, “would I go back?” I would not bike there to eat it, but it’s OK if you’re driving through Naples (NY!).

BTW, there is another pizzeria across the street from Luigi’s in Naples, called, you guessed it, Neapolitan Pizzeria! We’ve had it before (after our first trip to the real Napoli), but I can’t remember if it was good. I’ll bike there soon!
