Today, June 22, 2020 was to be the first pizzeria in the Great Pizza Search (was is the important word, unfortunately).
With some thought, I developed some personal criteria (subject to change) for a pizzeria to which I’d bike.
- Not part of a national (Dominos, etc…) or regional (Mark’s, Salvatore’s) chain
- Far enough away to make the ride to get there and back a challenge
- The pizzeria has a website with an “About Me/Us” section that had a good story
After deliberation and review of Google Maps, I chose to ride to Palmyra, NY to Nima’s Pizzeria. Palmyra, NY is about a 25 mile ride in each direction, Nima’s website has an About Us section that piqued my interest, and Nima’s is not a chain.
I started much later than normal, about 1pm. I prefer to be out the door between 8am to 9am, though lately it’s been around 10am. It was also HOT, 90F. My wife decided that she’d drive down to meet me and join the eating part of the adventure.

Since I was riding well and ahead of schedule, I took a roundabout loop so that I’d not get to Nima’s too much before Cathy.
I pulled up on my bike and got this picture while waiting. And waited. And waited for Cathy.

While waiting (did I say that I waited?), I rode around Palmyra. I’ve ridden here 100’s of times, but it was the first time that I noticed a historic marker on a building.

I don’t know much about the Masons other than what I’ve seen in movies, and I’m unsure as to why this one has a National Historic designation. BUT,as with my “In Search of Post Offices”, the process has allowed me to “see” things that I otherwise wouldn’t.
While wondering, I noticed a fellow sitting on the step of Nima’s. He was on his phone and not wearing a mask. I realize that “wearing vs not wearing” has become political in the US, but as a “senior citizen” with two known health issues (despite riding 200 – 300 miles per week!), I need to be cautious.
I approached Nima’s again, and the fellow rose from the step and went inside and behind the counter.
Uh Oh! Given personal health concerns, I couldn’t go into order. Then a customer went in without a mask. That sealed it for me. NO PIZZA TODAY!
To top it off, it started to thunder! Good thing Cathy had arrived to drive me home as it was a downpour for the 25 mile drive back.

Fail!
